Tesla’s In Crisis, How Would You Save It?

- Tesla is at a crossroads as Elon Musk is widely disliked and people are protesting at dealerships.
- The Cybertruck is a flop, while the Model S and X have become slow-selling senior citizens.
- That’s just a glimpse into their troubles, so how would you save the company?
There are troubled automakers and then there’s Tesla. The brand has found itself in an unimaginable situation where they’re the target of protests because of their CEO. If that wasn’t bad enough, people are shooting up dealerships and firebombing cars. Customers are fleeing, sales are down, and revenues are off. The Cybertruck is also a flop, while Tesla stock is down nearly 25% year-to-date.

While that’s just scratching the surface, it brings about an interesting question. How would you save Tesla? There’s no easy answer, but one of the first moves would probably be to let Elon Musk go and distance the company from him.
While the executive is known to be an outspoken attention seeker, that’s no longer a plus. Instead, it’s a giant liability and study after study has shown people simply don’t like him.

The next steps are harder to phantom, but some of Tesla’s lineup has gotten stale. While the Model 3 and Model Y were recently updated, the Model S and X feel like dinosaurs. A redesign or an extensive refresh would certainly help, although this might not boost sales much as deliveries of non-Model 3/Y vehicles only totaled 12,881 units in the first quarter.
Speaking of low volume models, you might as well kill the second-generation Tesla Roadster at this point. It feels more like vaporware than an actual car as it was introduced in November of 2017.
Ending it would serve multiple purposes as it would likely save cash and distance Tesla from Musk’s unfulfilled hype machine. On the topic of promises that are never fulfilled, it’s probably time to step up or shut up about ‘true’ full-self driving. The Cybercab could do this, but does anyone really believe that at this point?

Other than that, the company should continue to focus on the Model 3 and Model Y. They’re strong performers for a reason and they’re still pretty fresh at this point.
As for the Cybertruck, Tesla already seems to be addressing lackluster demand as they recently introduced a more affordable variant. That’s probably the right move and cheaper models should be on the horizon.
