These Are The Most Overhyped Cars On Sale

  • We asked which new cars were the most overrated, and your feedback was clear.
  • With over 150 comments, a consensus emerged on what’s overrated in new cars.
  • Rather than specific models, most believe certain segments are the most overrated.

Every day automotive companies produce highly polished press releases about their latest and greatest creations. Sometimes, that innovative product truly does change the way we enjoy cars. Most times though, the vehicle or feature in question isn’t actually as impressive as it might sound.

QOTD: What’s The Most Overhyped, Overrated Car On The Market Today?

To that end, we asked you what new vehicles on sale today were the most overrated of the bunch. It turns out that for many of you, it’s specific segments that are actually the big offenders. In one popular answer, the entire market was to blame. Let’s take a moment and break down each of the most overrated cars according to you.

Lexus GX / Toyota Land Cruiser

Fifth place goes to the new off-roaders from Toyota and Lexus. What’s surprising is that it was a 4Runner owner who submitted them. “As a Toyota fan and current owner of a 4Runner, it pains me to say I feel that the new Land Cruiser and GX are both over hyped and a disappointing deviation from what their previous models were.

To me, it seems Toyota was surprised at the staying power of the 5th gen 4Runner and decided to triple down and make everything 4Runner-esque,” says Ben. Unlike the rest of these options, every single reply agreed with him.

Ford Bronco

Coming in fourth place with eight upvotes is the Ford Bronco, which is interesting since last month we reviewed one. The main commenter didn’t explain their reasoning, but others did chime in. “It’s commensurate with what it should be. Just at best meeting expectations, just with years of delays and issues. As such, the hype exceeded the product.”

Personally, I think this comment isn’t too far off of the mark. Is the Bronco a game-changing off-roader? Not really. Is it worth the money? Only for people who will actually go off-road in it. That doesn’t mean that it’s not a fun or well-built vehicle though.

New Cars In General

10 people upvoted the idea that buying a new car of any kind is falling for the hype. “Buy used,” says Andrew, and it’s not hard to see why. ECM commented “Slightly used is just as good as a brand new car and will save you thousands.” That statement can absolutely be true. Considering the value offered by a certified pre-owned program is worthwhile too.

EV Trucks

The often cuddly and glass-half-full thinker JT chimed in to nominate EV trucks as a bunch. “They’re completely useless, they’re symbols of copious waste of materials to satisfy egos, and cannot stand up to ICE trucks for work or play.” Not everyone agreed, but he did get 13 upvotes to snag silver here.

One dissenting person said “The use-case is quite high for something like a Rivian R1T. Fast, practical, and capable, all in one.” That’s a bit of an over-generalization probably, but there’s no question about how fast and capable an R1T is off-road… til the battery is low and a charger is nowhere to be found.

Jeeps

Two comments combined to get the win here and they included the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee with a total of 18 upvotes and not a single downvote. That tells us that Jeeps are what you bunch consider the most overrated vehicles on sale today.

“Pricey, boring, and still as unreliable as ever,” said one comment. It’s interesting to note just how much price has to do with this equation. Only the Bronco didn’t garner comments about its MSRP and at the same time, I can’t help but think it plays a significant role.
