New Rivian R2 SUV Confirmed For A March 7 Debut
Rivian has officially confirmed the introduction of the smaller and more affordable R2 series on March 7 through a tweet (are we still calling it that?) on X. While the brief nine-second clip does not reveal the electric vehicle, we do know from a previous video with the company’s CEO, RJ Scaringe, teasing the new model under a wrap at the studio that it will be an SUV. (Updated 2/5/2024).
Municipal meetings are normally about as fun as watching paint dry, but one in Laguna Beach, California is raising eyebrows as it appears to reveal details about the launch of the Rivian R2.

Noticed by a Redditor and then posted on the Rivian Forums, the agenda notes reveal city officials recommended to approve Rivian’s request to utilize a portion of Main Beach Park for an event scheduled on March 7, 2024. This came despite a number of emails opposed to the move with some calling it a “step too far” and a “disgrace.”
In the agenda report, the city noted Rivian refurbished and reopened the Laguna Beach movie theater and is now planning to “host its worldwide production launch event” at the Rivian Theatre in March. The company wants to support the event by displaying vehicles at the aforementioned park.
The rest of the document is pretty boring, but officials noted Rivian has “generously” offered to donate two vehicles to the city at no cost for three years. However, the report notes this is a “separate” issue.
The final page is a map labeled “Rivian R2 Launch” and it shows five vehicles parked on the grass. They’ll be joined by an ice cream cart and the models are slated to be on display from 3:45 PM to sunset on March 7, much to the horror of multiple California Karens.

That being said, the public is invited to visit and learn more about Rivian vehicles. However, the city noted they’ll be on display for “informational purposes only” as using city property to sell products or services is a big no-no, aside from concessions.
Rivian teased the R2 SUV last May and it’s significantly smaller than the R1S. It’s slated to cost between $40,000 and $60,000 thanks in part to a simpler architecture. Of course, it looks like we can expect to learn a lot more about it on March 7.
