The Mercedes G-Class is one of the brand’s coolest and most sought after vehicles. Due to its popularity, rumors of a ‘baby’ G or GLG have been circulating for years, but to date, Mercedes has not yet released such a model.

However, Handelsblatt is reporting the company wants to launch a “mini-G” around 2026. The model would reportedly be slightly shorter than the real G-Wagon, but be significantly lower and presumably less capable.

The model is rumored to ride on the upcoming MMA platform, which is slated to debut in 2024. The architecture will be used to underpin the company’s next-generation “Entry Luxury” vehicles, which are expected to include the redesigned GLA and GLB as well as the next CLA and CLA Shooting Brake.

Taking it a step further, MotorTrend says that should it be approved, the G-Class inspired SUV will most likely be an electric vehicle with a range exceeding 300 miles and fast charging capability thanks to the 800-volt system.

Interestingly, Mercedes has already confirmed plans to “reduce the number of [Entry Luxury] model variants from seven to four while significantly elevating the technological substance of these products.” Handelsblatt alluded to this as the report mentioned the A- and B-Class are getting the axe.

While Mercedes-Benz Group Chairman Ola Källenius is reportedly a big fan of a “mini-G” model, little else is known about the vehicle at this point. Some reports indicate that there are others within the company who are opposed to the model, leaving its production prospects uncertain. Despite the speculation, no official statements have been made by Mercedes-Benz regarding the development of the vehicle.

Although a number of questions remain regarding the rumored “mini-G” model, a smaller and more affordable take on the popular G-Class sounds like a sure-fire way to make money and tap into the booming off-road SUV market.
