Jaguar Unveils Lighter And More Powerful I-Type 6 Race Car For Formula E

Jaguar TCS Racing has unveiled the new I-Type 6, which is being billed as the “most advanced and efficient electric Jaguar race car ever.”

Set to make its racing debut in January, the model is a Gen3 racer that features front and rear powertrains. The front motor-generator provides 250 kW of regeneration, while the rear unit provides 350 kW for a grand total of 600 kW. That’s more than twice the regenerative capability of the Gen2 car and it eliminates the need for conventional rear brakes.

Besides the increased regeneration, the car is 163 lbs (74 kg) lighter and has an additional 134 hp (100 kW / 136 PS) as the model now develops up to 469 hp (350 kW / 476 PS). Thanks to the weight loss and extra oomph, the car is now able to hit a top speed of 200 mph (322 km/h).

While the specs are shared with other Gen3 cars, Jaguar’s racers will sport a new livery that combines carbon black with satin white and gold accents. Furthermore, the cars have an asymmetric design so fans will be able to tell drivers Mitch Evans and Sam Bird apart.

Besides providing a glimpse at the new race car, Jaguar said the model will “continue to be a real-world test bed” that powers “important race-to-road learning for electric powertrain, sustainability and software technologies.” The automaker went on to say this technology transfer will “directly enable the reimagination of Jaguar as an all-electric, modern luxury brand from 2025.”
